Bassam, a Palestinian working in Cleveland, returns home to find a wife after his first marriage fails. Ultimately he agrees to an arranged marriage with Mariam, and heads back to the United States while she moves in with his family and waits to receive her paperwork so she can join him. Processing the paperwork takes a long time, though, and when she finally reunites with her husband, Mariam realizes that life in the United States is not as charmed as she expected.
