For about 30 years, pregnant women were routinely given a form of synthetic estrogen called DES to reduce the risk of miscarriage and other complications, until it was discovered in the early 1970s that babies exposed to this drug often developed rare forms of cancer. Filmmaker Judith Helfand was one of these ''DES daughters,'' and her documentary covers both her cancer surgery and her participation in a class-action lawsuit against the makers of the drug.
