One bleak winter during the Great Depression, city kid Rusty is sent to stay on his grandparents' Minnesota farm. He finds it hard adapting to rural life, and to the withering anger of his gruff grandfather, for whom Rusty is a painful memory of the son who died in World War I. Grandfather and grandson are eventually brought together when they haul their family melodeon to the local church as a gift on Christmas morning.
